KIDS’ CLAYTIME (YCL) Instructor: Derek Johnson Make a lump of clay come alive! Your kids will create useful pots and sculptural masterpieces that will last a lifetime. Nothing like getting creative in the mud! Derek will show the kids how to wheel throw, hand build, texturize, and glaze. Twenty-five pounds of clay, glazing, and firing are included. Additional clay is available to purchase: $25 for 25 lbs. Painting – Learn how to paint with acrylics! How do you mix the perfect purple? What brush works best where? Kids will learn all about this friendly medium while creating a painting to take home that day. Then they’ll learn how to cut out, sew, sandwich and top stich – or quilt on top. Local experienced grandmas run the class. Learn how to dismantle and reassemble old necklaces and parts with new fasteners to a completely new, unique piece. Learn all about the wonders of epoxy to turn nothing into something! If you have some old jewelry bring it, but we have plenty to share. We work on panel and canvas learning numerous painting techniques all week. We will be taking a walking field trip for some fun outdoor work too. Learn how to set up a comic strip and fill it. Professional Illustrator Wade will give tips on how to make characters come alive and talk to each other. We'll finish the day with a complete comic strip using your own characters and help ink in an oversized strip together! This course is about the most comprehensive three hours of cartooning you could get anywhere. You won’t want to miss a second of the creativity. You will create a painting of a swamp thing, clay fish, stuffed sharks, and ABC book of underwater creatures. Stop Motion AnimationApril 7-11, 2014, 9am to 12noon Ages 10-12 Teamwork helps you communicate your ideas more effectively in art. Building on the story-boarding process: brainstorming, sketching, acting, and discussion, you will create a clay project, which you will film and animate. You will design sets, characters, direct and edit your film. You will have an opportunity to use some of the latest software for your final production. Downtown RobotsApril 7-11, 2014, 1 to 4pm Ages 10-12 Using basic drawing techniques and photos of machines like cars, motorcycles, planes, and trains, you’ll draw and color all sorts of mechanized marvels. Drawing PortfolioApril 7-11 2014, 1 to 4pm Ages 10-12 You’ll gain daily experience with graphite and charcoal from the observation of still life, landscape and the figure. Begin to build your own portfolio of drawings. Pre-College DrawingApril 7-11, 2014, 9am to 4pm Ages 13-17 Think attending art college is in your future? Get a jump on the competition by building a portfolio of drawings based on observation. Focus on the basics of composition and rendering in this day camp which will include studies based on still life and clothed models. Class will also include drawing on location around Grand Rapids. Teen Screen PrintingApril 7-11, 2014, 9am to 4pm Ages 13-17 Learn the basics of the process of screen printing by drawing your own images, learning to format them, preparing screens, and pulling prints. Modern in Motion July 14-18, ages 4-6 (grades K-1) July 21-25, ages 7-9 (grades 2-4) Celebrate the beauty of movement & design with modern and quirky art-making methods. This camp offers a week of hands on activities inspired by influential images, structures, and shapes present in Michigan Modern.
