First Graders started off the school year in art class by drawing monsters using their imagination. Students listened to the story When a Monster is Born to inspire their monster creations. Students used their imagination and knowledge of shape, line, color and pattern that they learned in Kindergarten to create silly fun monster drawings using black markers and crayons. Check out some pictures of these fantastic monsters created by Lakewood first graders below!

2nd through 5th grade students have been busy creating very unique self-portraits. Given the new norm of wearing masks in school, we created self portraits that relate to the current times. In art class we discussed how each of us are wearing masks yet our personalities still shines and all the unique qualities that we have still show in ours eyes, body language and character. That's why these self portraits show them masked and unmasked surrounded with words that describe how amazing each of them are. These awesome Behind The Mask Self-Portraits adorn the lockers down our halls reminding us how unique and amazing each student is at Lakewood.
These young kiddos have been very busy exploring The Art Element of LINE over the past couple days in art class. Students practiced tracing lines in marker and created awesome oil resist LINE paintings. Check out some of the amazing paintings created by Lakewood kiddos below! : )
Welcome ARTISTS!!
I am so excited to teach all my students the wonderful world of art this year! It has been a great first couple of weeks seeing all my students that I have missed so dearly and meeting all my new friends at Lakewood! It is going to be an interesting year with all the changes but we will make the most of every art class together and problem solve ways to keep on creating in our new classroom environment while practicing social distancing and safe art tool procedures. This website is a great place for parents to come see what students are learning about throughout the year in art. I can't wait to share all the awesome projects we will be creating in art class with all of you! Have a great weekend and I'll see all my awesome artists next week in class! Remember ART MAKES YOU SMART!!! 4th and 5th grade students have been very busy learning about art from Africa! Students created beautiful oil pastel African Masks using their knowledge of color blending, symmetry and pattern.
Kinders are learning about the Art Element: SHAPE! Students are exploring different art mediums to create pictures inspired by shapes.
1st graders are learning how to use their imagination and a variety of materials to make playful monster creations. In the first quarter we read the story Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and created Wild Thing Collage puppets. Currently we are exploring earth clay while sculpting Monster Pinch Pots. We will be glazing them when we return from Holiday break. : )
Students in 2nd and 3rde grade just finished sculpting and glazing clay turtle figurines inspired by the well known Native American Ceramics artist Helen Cordero.
4th and 5th grade students learned about the abstract collage artist Romare Bearden and his famous urban collage called "The Block." Students are currently working in groups to create a large collaborative cityscape inspired by Romare Bearden.
What an awesome night celebrating the arts at Lakewood! Thank you to all those that vlounteered and made it out to this great event! |
Mrs. HallI am the art teacher and creative coach at Lakewood and Waukazoo Elementary Schools, part of West Ottawa Public Schools. I received my Bachelor and Master of Art Education at Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I'm very proud to say that I am an art teacher and truly enjoy exploring the fine arts with my students. I am also a fine artist with a focus in printmaking. It is my joy of teaching that inspires me to be a better artist; the joy of creating my own art work that makes me a better teacher. I am very thankful to have a career in something that I am passionate about and love. Archives
